The aim of PestSens is to develop a new type of sensor node for the purpose of pest monitoring in the food industry. Until now, traps had to be checked individually, which involves a great deal of manual labour. Automated pest monitoring systems do not yet exist. The project therefore aims to develop a sensor node with embedded artificial intelligence that continuously monitors the traps and enables early detection of an infestation. This can greatly increase the ability to react to a pest infestation.
The HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) principles are particlularly taken into account when researching the sensor node. The sensor node should be equally applicable for three trap categories for rodents, flying and crawling small pests and at the same time be easy to use and handle. The entire electronics, including the sensor system, evaluation and radio unit, are designed to be very energy-efficient to ensure a long battery life. This should make pest monitoring more cost-efficient and labour-saving.
Another advantage of the monitoring system is that customer support can be ensured even in times of crisis. If necessary, contact could be reduced to maintenance of the sensor network and control without affecting the pest monitoring itself.
