German Conference on Medical Image Computing – Bildverarbeitung für die Medizin (BVM)
From March 9 to 11, leading scientists and industry experts discussed the latest developments in the computer-aided analysis of medical image data.
The conference was organised by the Regensburg Medical Image Computing (ReMIC) laboratory under the chair of Prof. Dr. Christoph Palm and offered a rich programme of lectures, poster presentations and keynotes.
For more than 30 years, the event has focused on the computer-aided analysis of medical image data with potential applications in diagnostics, surgical planning and interventions. This year, a special focus was placed on the advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, which have a significant impact on the field.
Promoting young talents and scientific excellence
A central concern of the BVM is the promotion of young scientists. The conference serves as a platform for doctoral candidates and students to discuss their research results with the professional community and gain valuable feedback. Particularly outstanding contributions were honoured with prizes, including the BVM Award for the best thesis in the field of medical image processing.
Prof. Dr. Christoph Palm, chair of the conference, emphasised the relevance of the event: „The rapid development in medical image processing shows the enormous potential of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. The BVM offers an excellent platform to bring together research, industry and young scientists and to jointly develop new solutions for medicine.“
The conference was opened by Prof. Dr. Oliver Steffens, Vice President for Research and International Affairs at OTH Regensburg. In his welcoming address, he emphasised: „OTH Regensburg is proud to be the first university of applied sciences to host this renowned and established conference. BVM has been synonymous with excellent interdisciplinary research and innovative developments in medical image processing since the 1990s, and has been particularly closely linked to artificial intelligence for some years now – topics and methods that also have a special significance at OTH Regensburg.“
The programme started on Sunday, March 9, with the first tutorials. High-ranking keynote speakers, including Ivana Isgum from the University of Amsterdam, David Hawkes from University College London and Dirk Wilhelm from TUM Munich, presented their research work.

Research and innovation at OTH Regensburg
For many years, OTH Regensburg has focussed on interdisciplinary research in the field of medical informatics. The close proximity to the University of Regensburg with its Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital offers ideal conditions for synergetic co-operation between medical, computer science and engineering disciplines. Important milestones were the introduction of the Medical Informatics degree programme 18 years ago and the founding of the Regensburg Center of Biomedical Engineering 13 years ago. With the Regensburg Center for Artificial Intelligence, OTH Regensburg promotes its activities in the field of artificial intelligence, including medical image processing, since 2020.
RCAI congratulates Prof. Dr. Christoph Palm and his team on their outstanding success in the field of AI!
